Military and Veterans: Join and Be Proud

With the rise and acceptance of the rife's dominance-unheard of ideas came to be accepted. Calvary, which have always been able to turn an enemy to flight, if they had gottten to their enemies flank or rear, now was met by men with bayonets in a square. The horseman had lost their ability to run head long into the enemy with the Greek hoplites. They lost it again with the pikemen.  Now they couldn't even count on  success as often from the sides- and even the rear! What was a light horseman to do but wait for a general retreat of the enemy and then let them have your spur. Wow how the mighty had fallen! This was to develop over a longer period of time not as I'm presenting my sumation here, but this was what was happening. Britain's empire was won due to the stiff upper lip of its men on the battlefield, with the calvary and superior numbers of the natives being dumbfounded by these men in bright colors who wouldn't even run when surrounded!

At this time we had the use of grenades come into use. This is where  grenadiers below got their name.

With the the perfection of the gatilling gun into the modern machine gun we see a major passing of the torch from the bayoneted rife to the machine gun.  At the battle of Culloden in Scotland  we had the brave highlanders being cut down by the new rifle, but in WW I we we the bayoneted rifleman cut down by the new machine of death.

Vehicles

The first vehicle to have an effect of wars was the train. Both Russia and Canada built tracks at great expense across their lands so as to mark it as their own. To others it meant men and supplies could be rushed along to deal with threat to their land. In WWI why didn't the German's freeze during several winters on the Russian front? They had built an extensive network of tracks as they went. At the out break of WWI the Russians were matching on berlin with their best men and equipment. The German commander used his rail netork to isolate part of the advancing Russian army and destroy it.  From then on the Russians were fighting  with lesser units that were often poorly equiped on railway lines that weren't as numerous and of equal quality.  The Germans had expected to deal with France first on the western front first, and second deal with Russia on the eastern front. It ended up being the opposite.

The Truck arrived too, but when you have no fuel a horse eats grass. When you have no food you can eat horses.

Below we have the first tanks that were called land battleships- and so named below. For Churchill had gotten this idea from the navy, and it probably was a good selling point to the idea. For everyone knew the power of battleships, while no one new the power of steel tanks in the beginning.

Now today we have all sorts of armor, that it it turn had replaced the machine gun and artillery peice. For it could do the both jobs better and protect the men as well. With missles coming in to more common use the tank is bound to have an assortment of its own as standard operating equipment.

Each tank is bound to continue to have machine guns and an artillery piece to deal with infantry and an overwhelming amount of enemy tanks, but the age of the missle is upon us. This is why the Chinese, Russians and Europeans are putting a lot of funds into this area.

Aircraft

In the first world war the effect of aircraft hadn't matched expectations. It wasn't till the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that it complete importance took over.

The Battle of Britain sowed that the strongest navy in the world wasn't enough to defend your island anymore. Fortunately some in England had reconized this early. If they hadn't we would all be talking about the old coots that wouldn't change there thinking. The Spitfire gets all the fame and did take on the Germans and beat them. Below is a less romantic design shot.

What took on the bombers in the battle of britain was the Hawker's Hurricane. These planes had much more fire power and therefore sliced into the German bombers dropping bombs on Englsih cities way before any German whining about Allied bombing of Hamburg, Dresden etc.  In fact the Germans used their blimps to bomb English cities in the WWI. It's a funny old world when the instigators cry foal after breaking the rules of war many times first!

The Hurricane was made of a lot of wood to. This helped for steel was in short supply with German wolf packs sinking ships. This allowed them to be fixed quite quickly as compared to the Spitfire. This made it the real under appreciated workhorse. Kind of the same way good men are treated today. Singers and actors get all the attension while hard working men in business get called money grubbing.

If the Germans were fustrated in winning the war outright by the English fighters, it was the American Mustang in large numbers that made them know it was all over. With special fuel tanks these nasty kings of the sky could escort the bombers all the way into Germany's heartland.

Some historical revisionists have tried to undermine the effect the bombers had  on Germany. Certainly the Russians like to dimiss the bombers effect, for they certainly paid the price in men. These critics point to the how German production had continued to go up despite the bombing.

Going up by 10% verse say 110% is something that escapes their effort to appease their German friends at their cocktail parties at the embassies. These foxes are to expected when the lions have left positions of importance. Foxes have always weaved their webs.

Just look to the Dolittle raid and how it forced the Japanese to pull back resources to defend their island to see the bravery and need for answering the enemies bad choice of tatics. Here below we have a Dolittle bomber taking of the deck of an aircraft carrier to bomb Tokyo. This also was the first time the Japanese knew their government was lying for they had told everyone it could never be done.

Comunication

In the US Civil war cutting the telegraph wires was quite a new thing, while inWWI everyone had a lot of  wireless (radio) means of communication, baring say the Russians. This limited it importance a great deal and only now with the Americans computerized systems are they rising to be dominancy. Eventually anything big moving about in a no-man's-land with out a reconized code will be ordered distroyed by people miles away. This is why large wars will be smart missle wars in the future, and the key to that is the same purposed used in the the wireless above. No one new its importance then, but everyone can see its importance now.
